Phillies take 2 of 3 from the Friars

Game 1 at Philly,

Ryan Howard had a huge day with 6 RBI and a homerun. The Phillies smacked around the beleaguered Padres pitching staff as they pounded starter Matt Clement for 10 runs.  J.A. Happ threw 6 innings of scoreless ball to win his first game of the season.  "Skates" Smith got into the Phillie hit parade with 4 safeties himself. Phillies 14....Padres 1.

Game 2 at Philly,

Lonnie Smith had another perfect day as he went 3 for 3 including a homerun. For the series, Smith is 7 for 7.  Sanford evened his record at 2-2 with 8 strong innings.  Padre starter, Bob Shirley went to 1-2 as he surrendered seven runs in seven innings pitched.  San Diego shortstop Kahlil Greene got 3 hits in a losing effort. Phillies 7....Padres 2.

Game 3 at San Diego,

San Diego starter Dave Frieselben scattered 11 hits over seven innings to prevent a Philly sweep.  Roberto Alomar tripled in a run and scored when John Kruk lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.  San Diego added solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to increase their lead to 4-0.  Philadelphia got in the scoring column on a 2 run blast to left off the bat of Richie Allen.  However, there was no further scoring as Butch Metzger pitched the final two innings to nail down the San Diego win and Metzger's first save of the tourney.  Freiselben earned the win to improve to 1-2....Padres 4....Phillies 2
