Redbirds take 2 of 3 from Friars

In a series that featured three close games, the St. Louis Cardinals took 2of 3 to get within a game of .500 while the San Diego Padres hopes to escape the Expansion cellar took a hit.

The Padres took the opener in St. Louis, 4-3. Stan Jefferson had three hits including a one out triple in the 7th, where he scored after an intentional walk to the "Secretariat", Dave Winfield, when Albert Pujols misplayed Mike Ivie's grounder. This broke a 3-3 tie and proved to the game winner as Greg Walter and Luis DeLeon finished off the eighth and ninth for the Padres, with DeLeon's scoreless ninth earning him his 4 th save of the season.

Matt Morris scattered 3 hits and struck out 9 in 7 1/3 innings as the Cardinals even the series with a 3-1 win in game two. Joe Cunningham homered and Don Blasingame drove in two runs to give Morris enough offense, while three Cardinal relievers held down the fort late in the game, Al Hrabosky, Cloyd Boyer, and Todd Worrell - Worrell earning his 6th save.

Pitching ruled in the rubber match as lefthanders Vinegar Bend Mizell and Mark Thurmond set the tone, and the Cardinals eventually pushed a run across in the top of the tenth inning to grab a 2-1 win. Mizell went the first 7 innings for St. Louis, giving up 4 hits and one run, while Thurmond went nine innings and gave up a run, that one coming on Albert Pujols' sixth home run of the year.

The Cardinals 10th inning run was a bit of a gift as Padre reliever Rich Rodriguez' wildness helped them out. Alex Grammas singled to start the extra frame, and speedy Julian Javier followed with a bunt single. Eddie Kasko sacrificed the runners to second and third. After striking out Curt Flood for the second out, Rodriguez walked Allen Craig and Pujols, the latter forcing what proved to be the winning run. Worrell pitched a 3 up-3 down bottom half to get save number 7.

A's sweep Royals

GAME 1 - Royals Stadium
Keough vs B.Butler
A's 4, Royals 2

Tied 2-2 after 8 the series opener looked destined for extra innings after Dick Howser was caught stealing in the top of the 9th after leading off with a clean single.  Mitchell Page followed that with what have been an RBI double.  Big Mac was walked intentionally and Mr. October popped up to the catcher for out number 2.  Cespedes worked out a walk to load the bases with 2 outs so "The Glider", Ed Charles could face Joakim Soria.  Charles lined a single that scored two to make it 4-2 A's.  Ryan Cook pitched a scoreless 9th for his 2nd save of the season.  KC banged out 10 hits, but couldn't push more than 2 runners across the dish.  Kevin Seitzer was 3 for 4 for the team in blue and white.

GAME 2 - Oakland Coliseum
Appier vs Byrd
A's 9, Royals 2

A combined 7 runs in the the bottom of the 6th and 7th blew this game open.  Oakland's resurgent offense was led by September call up Terrence Long, who went 2 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBI's.  Long has been hitting .447 since entering the lineup as the lefty half of the centerfield platoon.  Another September callup, Ben Grieve was also 2 for 4.  Harry Byrd (3-3, 3.74) went 6 2/3 and gave up just 2 runs (1 earned) to get the win.  Rollie Fingers pitche the final two scoreless inning to finish out the game.  KC's Tom Goodwin (2-3) boosted his average to .456 as manager Ryan has his leadoff man try to bunt his way to a .500 batting average and KOD immortality.

GAME 3
Gale vs Blanton
A's 5, Royals 4

Six inning Joe Blanton (2-3, 4.41) got a rare win thanks to the bullpen locking it down for him.  Andrew Bailey did have a scary moment or two in the 9th as the Royals made it a 1 run game, but still held on for his 3rd save.  The top 3 in Oakland's lineup each had 2 hit games.  Terrence Long continues to amaze (2-5, .442).  Mitchell Page remained consistent (2-4, .340) and glove man Walt Weiss (2-5, .175) inched back toward the Mendoza line.  Big Mac (.198) was the only Oakland regular not to post a hit.  Newcomer Ben Grieve is looking more and more comfortable in the DH role hitting .476 since September 1st.  He hit his 1st homer of the season today off Rich Gale to start off a 4 run 4th.  Oakland swept the series and looks to be back in the pennant race.  KC (13-21) finds their season on life support.

'Spos take 2 of 3 from fading Phightin's

GAME 1 - Citizens BB
Lannan vs Happ
Expos 3, Phillies 1

John Lannan edges J.A. Happ in this battle of lefties who only go 6 innings.  Lannan (3-1, 4.01) gave up just 1 run on 3 hits while fanning 8.  Happ had a shutout until he tired in the top of the 7th and combined with Ryan Radson to give up 3 runs.  Larry Parrish led off the inning with a single and was immediately removed for pinch runner Tim Raines, who stole second.  "The Hawk", Andre Dawson tripled home Raines to tie the score then scored on a daring base running play while tagging up on "Kid" Carter's shallow fly to right.  With 2 outs Ellis Valentine singled, then stole second and third then scored on an error by Richie Allen at third.  Chad Cordero pitched a scoreless 9th to post his 2nd save of the season.  Dale Murray pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the setup role.

GAME 2 - Stadie' Olympique
Ruffin vs Hermanson
Phillies 6, Expos 1

"The Bull", Greg Luzinski homered twice and had 4 RBI's as the normally docile Philly offense showed some spunk.  Bruce Ruffin (1-2, 2.56) finally got some run support and responded with a 7 inning effort of 1 run ball.  Bottalico and Brusstar combined to shutout the 'Spos over the final 2 frames.  Ashburn and Montanez also hit homers as Philly took full advantage of the long ball.

GAME 3
Culp vs Rogers
Expos 7, Phillies 2

Montreal broke open a close 3-1 contest with 4 huge runs in the bottom of the 8th.  Steve Rogers (2-2, 1.78) finally got some runs to work with and gave up just 1 hit in 8 innings of work (an RBI single to Luzinski).  Rogers even got into the act on the offensive side as well by delivering the go ahead runs in the bottom of the 4th with a two out 2 run single.

Reds take 2 of 3 from Amazin's

GAME 1 - Shea Stadium
Browning vs Seaver
Mets 5, Reds 4

A huge 3 run outburst in the bottom of the 8th put the Amazin's ahead for the first time all day.  Jason Phillips started it off with a solo blast and pinch hitter Wally Backman finished it with a two run double that scored Kevin Mitchell and Darryl Strawberry, who was intentionally walked just before Backman strolled to the plate.

GAME 2
Nolan vs Matlack
Reds 11, Mets 3

Cincy was all over the 1972 ROY, Jon Matlack.  A huge 5 run third inning helped hasten the lanky lefty's departure.  The Met pen wasn't much better.  Gary Nolan fanned 7 Amazin's in a workman like effort.  "Dibbs" got the final 5 outs in a non save opportunity.  Joey Votto hit 2 doubles and knocked in 5 for the Big Red Machine.

GAME 3 - Riverfront Stadium
Gooden vs Simpson
Reds 2, Mets 1

Doc fanned 8, but Simpson was 1 run more stingy.  A great pitcher's duel for those of us who like quick games.  Doc had a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the 8th when the Redlegs scored 2.  Vada Pinson led off with a triple and scored when "Charlie Hustle" doubled into the gap.  A Joey Votto sac fly would score Rose 3 batters later, which sent the Queen City fans home exceptionally happy.
